NPDES ID

A nine-character code used to uniquely identify a permitted NPDES facility.

FRS ID

A 12-character code used to uniquely identify a facility site within the EPA Facility Registry Service (FRS) database.

TRI ID(s)

A 15-character code used to uniquely identify facilities in EPA's TRI. This ID is also known as the Toxics Release Inventory Facility Identification Number (TRIFID).

Facility Type

Indicates the type of facility owner (i.e., Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTW), non-POTW, or federal government).

Permit Type

Indicates the type of NPDES permit (e.g., NPDES Individual Permit, General Permit Covered Facility).

Permit Effective Date

A permit that is in its lifetime (Effective Date <= current date < expiration date).

Permit Expiration Date

A permit that 90 days after the expiration date has been reached on a permit that has no new Application Received Date or Complete Application Received date entered.

Major/Non-Major Indicator

A facility classification from NPDES permitting authorities based on factors such as toxic pollutant potential, ratio of discharge flow/stream flow volume, conventional pollutant loading, public health impact, water quality factors, and proximity to coastal waters.

Permit Issuance

The environmental agency that administers the permit, typically a state environmental agency or EPA Region.

Approved Pretreatment Program

A Yes/No field to indicate a NPDES permit with an approved pretreatment program. A NPDES permit with pretreatment responsibilities prescribes for the reduction of the amount of pollutants, the elimination of pollutants, or the alteration of the nature of pollutant properties in wastewater prior to or in lieu of discharging or otherwise introducing such pollutants into a publicly owned treatment works [40 CFR 403.3(q)]. Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Outfall

A Yes/No field to indicate whether the permit includes a CSO outfall(s). A combined sewer system (CSS) is a wastewater collection system owned by a municipality which conveys sanitary wastewater (domestic, commercial, and industrial) and stormwater through a single pipe system to a publicly owned treatment works. A combined sewer overflow (CSO) is the discharge from a CSS at a point prior to the treatment plant. CSOs are point sources subject to NPDES permit requirements including both technology-based and water quality-based requirements of the Clean Water Act.

County

The county name for the facility location.

Congressional District

An electoral constituency that elects a single member of congress. There are 435 congressional districts in the U.S.

Latitude/Longitude

Displays the latitude and longitude of the facility or permit holder as maintained in the program data system.

Facility Design Flow (Permit Application) (MGD)

The amount of wastewater flow, in million gallons per day (MGD), that the permitted facility is designed to accommodate, as entered in ICIS-NPDES.

Actual Average Facility Flow (Permit Application) (MGD)

The actual amount of wastewater flow at the facility at the time of the permit application, in million gallons per day (MGD), as entered in ICIS-NPDES.

4-Digit SIC Code

The primary Standard Industrial Classifications (SIC) code in TRI. The SIC code describes the primary activity of the facility. The first two digits in the code define a major business sector; the last two digits denote a facility's specialty within the major sector. For more information, see the SIC lookup.

6-Digit NAICS Code

The facility's primary North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code and description. NAICS has replaced the U.S. Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system. The system was developed to give special attention to developing production-oriented classifications for (a) new and emerging industries, (b) service industries in general, and (c) industries engaged in the production of advanced technologies. NAICS industries are identified by a 6-digit code. The first two digits represent the Industry sector, in which there exist 20 broad sectors. The third digit represents industry subsector, the fourth digit represents industry group, the fifth digit represents industry, and the sixth digit is U.S., Canadian, or Mexican National specific. Likely Point Source Category

A three-digit code that corresponds to an Effluent Limitations Guideline's 40 CFR. For example, Point Source Category (PSC) code 414 corresponds to Organic, Chemicals, Plastics, and Synthetic Fibers (40 CFR Part 414). EPA derives the likely PSC based on the reported NAICS code and best professional judgement.

This section describes the data elements that are presented in the Permit Limit and Monitoring Requirements table.

Pollutant Name [Pollutant Description]

The name of the pollutant used to identify the substance discharged. 

Parameter Code [Parameter Code]

The unique 5-character code identifying the parameter in EPA's program database.

CAS Number (Download Only) 

Chemical Abstract Service (CAS) number assigned by the American Chemical Society that uniquely identifies a chemical. Not all pollutants monitored in NPDES permits have a CAS number (e.g., Total Suspended Solids).

Substance Registry System ID (Download Only)

Unique identification number assigned to substances, such as chemicals, biological organisms, physical properties, and miscellaneous objects by EPA's Substance Registry Services, to provide a common substance identification method across multiple regulatory programs.

Permit Feature Number [Permit Feature Number]

The 3-digit code (e.g., 001) representing the permitted outfall or pipe of interest in EPA's program database. This is the identifier assigned for each location at which permit conditions are being applied.

Monitoring Period Date Range [Monitoring Period Start Date], [Monitoring Period End Date]

The date range that the NPDES permit limits or monitoring requirements are in effect. 

Limit Set Designator [Limit Set Designator]

An alphanumeric code used to designate a particular grouping of parameters within a limit set.

Monitoring Frequency [Monitoring Frequency]

Indicates how often the pollutant discharge is monitored (e.g., monthly, quarterly, etc.)

Limit Season ID [Season Number]

Indicates if seasonal parameter limits are applicable. '0' indicates that seasonal parameter limits are not applicable.

Season Start Date, Season End Date[Season Number]

Indicates the date range that the seasonal parameter limits are applicable.

Limit Qty 1, 2 (kg/day) [Limit Quantity 1 (kg/day)], [Limit Quantity 2 (kg/day)]

The quantity limit value type in units of kilograms per day and statistical basis (e.g., average, maximum, minimum). "Monitoring Only" indicates that the parameter is required to be measured.

Limit Conc 1, 2, 3 (mg/L) [Limit Conc 1 (mg/L)], [Limit Conc 2 (mg/L)], [Limit Conc 3 (mg/L)]

The concentration limit value type in units of milligrams per liter and statistical basis. "Monitoring Only" indicates that the parameter is required to be measured.
